Sales Volume Dropped By Nearly 50%, Live Streaming And Short Video Sales Impacted Offline Business In Malaysia

It is reported that the rise of live streaming and short video marketing on major social media has had a huge impact on offline store business in Malaysia.
Chen Wanli, acting president of the Malaysian Home Appliances Merchants Association, pointed out in an interview with reporters that the market survey results of a foreign company showed that under the influence of short video marketing, the sales of Malaysian home appliances merchants in offline stores have dropped significantly.
“According to relevant reports, sales of small home appliances priced below RM500 are facing a drop of up to 45%.”
He further analyzed that the hottest short video marketing platforms such as TikTok are very popular. According to observations, small products priced between RM200 and RM300, including blenders, steel pots, etc., are hot-selling products.
Based on the data he obtained, TikTok's online shopping transaction volume has surpassed other e-commerce platforms such as Lazada and Shopee.
“Our colleagues in the industry have found that most of the relatively low-priced products that consumers buy through online shopping platforms are imported from foreign countries such as China. Not only are the power sockets and voltages of these home appliances different from those in my country, but they also lack the SIRIM-ST label. And there are safety risks.”
He said that the Home Appliances Chamber of Commerce has written to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry regarding the above issues, hoping that the authorities will pay attention to the matter.
In addition, he also pointed out that although the government has introduced a policy to impose a 10% tax on overseas low-value goods below RM500, it has not been implemented yet.
The Malaysian Energy Commission has also informed Shopee and Lazada not to sell appliances that lack SIRIM-ST certification. If consumers find any sales practices, they can complain to the department.
