According to Thai media reports, the Thai Ministry of Commerce recently stated that in order to curb the impact of cheap and low-quality goods on the Thai market, foreign e-commerce platforms must be registered as legal entities in Thailand and open offices.

Deputy Minister of Commerce Napintong revealed that the Chinese e-commerce platform Temu has completed the registration of legal entities in Thailand on November 11, 2024. Once the relevant regulations are revised, all foreign e-commerce platform operators must register Thai legal entities.

To further protect Thailand's small and medium-sized enterprises from unfair competition, the government will amend the Tax Law to impose value-added tax on products sold online.

At the same time, in order to control product quality, the government plans to strengthen inspections on three categories of goods: agricultural products, consumer goods and industrial products. Customs will increase the review of imported goods and send personnel to monitor websites and other online platform products to ensure consumer rights.

In view of the strict supervision of imported products, the total value of Thailand's imported goods fell by about 20% from January to June, and the average monthly import value fell from 3.2 billion baht to 2 billion baht.

Napintong said that several government agencies, including the Office of the Consumer Protection Committee, have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen supervision of imported products and protect consumer rights, for example, checking products without Thai labels or user instructions and removing e-commerce products that infringe copyrights.
