On January 9, a message about a 10% tax on e-commerce transactions circulated on social networks in Vietnam, sparking widespread discussion and confusion.

According to the circulated notice, starting from January 1, 2025, tax authorities will have the right to access all seller accounts to collect e-commerce transaction data and impose a 10% tax on all transactions containing "BUY-SELL" content.

This news has confused individuals and businesses engaged in e-commerce business through live broadcast and social platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube.

In response, Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Taxation Bureau, Vietnam, urgently clarified that the information circulated on social networks is untrue. The Taxation Bureau is preparing to release official information to inform the public about the correct tax rates related to e-commerce.

According to current regulations, the tax rate for e-commerce business is 1.5% of income, including 1% VAT and 0.5% personal income tax. These tax rates apply to e-commerce sellers, and buyers do not need to pay additional taxes because the 1% VAT is already included in the price of the goods.
