The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) of the Philippines said on Thursday that Secretary Alfred Pascual held discussions with TikTok in Singapore on June 5 to strengthen their partnership and explore new ways to collaborate to enhance the Philippines' digital economy.

During the meeting, Pascual noted that the partnership with TikTok is a "critical step" to boost the country's e-commerce industry.

"This partnership will greatly contribute to the growth and development of the digital market, benefiting businesses, consumers and the economy as a whole," Pascual said.

TikTok was launched in the Philippines in May 2017 and launched TikTok Shop in April 2022. The platform currently has about 53 million users in the country and about 2 million sellers in TikTok Shop.

The DTI secretary also stressed the importance of working with online platforms to empower micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), especially in rural areas, as outlined in the Philippine E-Commerce 2025 Roadmap.

He welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between TikTok and the Philippine Intellectual Property Office, an agency under the Department of Trade and Industry, to collaborate in combating online counterfeiting and piracy and creating a safer e-commerce environment.
