Recently, Mr. Nguyen Lam Thanh, TikTok Vietnam representative, said at the seminar "Finding breakthrough solutions to promote cross-border e-commerce in ASEAN" that the total retail market in Vietnam in the first six months of 2024 did not increase much compared with 2023, but e-commerce increased by 54%.

Mr. Lam Thanh said that this data shows that the shift to e-commerce is very strong.

"In the Vietnamese market, after more than a year, about 3 million people have earned income through commercial activities on the TikTok platform," said Mr. Lam Thanh.

Explaining TikTok's strong acceleration in the field of e-commerce, Mr. Lam Thanh said that TikTok was originally an entertainment and education platform, and then deployed additional e-commerce businesses.

TikTok provides a complete solution for users and sellers. With TikTok, products and goods can be sold through live broadcasts. In particular, the production process and stories related to the product are introduced to enhance the understanding and convenience of buying and selling goods.

When talking about cross-border e-commerce activities, the TikTok Vietnam representative emphasized the goal of bringing products and services directly from producers to consumers. This goal is not limited to each country.

"For example, as Vietnamese, we also want to use the specialties of Indonesia, Thailand... and vice versa. When cross-border e-commerce develops, users in ASEAN can use the products freely," said Mr. Lam Thanh.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Huyen, Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, highly praised the role of e-commerce in Vietnam, especially the development of cross-border e-commerce in ASEAN countries.

Citing data from the statistics company Statista, Huyen said that cross-border e-commerce accounts for a large proportion of the total e-commerce revenue in Southeast Asian countries.

Generally speaking, cross-border e-commerce accounts for 30% in Thailand, 37% in Vietnam, and the highest in Malaysia and Singapore, at 44% and 60% respectively.

"Cross-border e-commerce has become one of the top priorities for the economic development of ASEAN countries," Ms. Huyen affirmed.
